In Greece, the election will take place on June 9th with the the postal vote option having already been sent. The issue in question is what is at stake in these elections, both for our country and for Europe in general.

A few weeks ago I talked about the fact that these and all the other elections we face are very important for our lives. For Europe, this electoral contest has, in my opinion, two main stakes: the future of the Union's foreign policy and the obstruction (or not) of the far right's rise in the continent. Regarding the first, Europe currently has to respond to two open fronts: Ukraine and Palestine. The first front is crucial to show us what the European Union is after all: is it a superpower that has sovereignty over the continent it is in? Or is it a bureaucracy without determination? The situation in Ukraine has, so far, shown the latter, and it will be interesting to see what happens after the upcoming election result. Regarding Palestine and Israel it is important to see whether the EU will take a clear stance on one side or the other (which seems unlikely at the moment) and whether the EU will act as a major force in influencing the trajectory of this bloodshed.

As a second stake, we have the rise of the far right. We see a tendency of individual Member States in supporting far-right parties. In Greece, we had three in the last elections: Niki, the Hellenic Solution and the Spartans. In Italy there is Meloni and in Germany the AfD which is bound to be the second biggest power. Thus, in these elections we will see how much Euroscepticism and immigration waves have consolidated the far right inside the Union. The challenge is that no matter the result, the next European Parliament be able to convince the world that the EU is a pillar of change both for the citizen's everyday life and for international issues.

Greece has also got a stake in these elections and it is the formation of the new domestic political scene. As it seems, it will be the first election that will show the disintegration of New Democracy's dominance. There will not be another 41% and we may see a descent of up to 10 points. On the other hand, we will also get to see which will become the main opposition party, with PASOK and SYRIZA ranking very closely in polls. Finally, we will find out which parties will be in the European Parliament: were the parties that entered the Parliament for the first time convincing? The new Loverdos and Kokkalis parties? Will Mera25 return? These are all interesting questions that will be answered in these elections.

Ultimately, this particular election has some important ramifications for how the EU will proceed internally and whether it will take a more dominant role in the international community. For Greece, it will bring a shake-up of the political landscape. Now it remains for each of us to cast our vote, to make sure all changes will be the result of our choices, and not a result of our indifference or tolerance.

[3
10,8,284,25
304
post-3353","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","tag-10","tag-8","tag-284","tag-25
https://politiquill.gr/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/420077173_334756852719970_5720109162751130944_n-Αντιγραφή-e1741618858347.webp","url2x":"https://politiquill.gr/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/420077173_334756852719970_5720109162751130944_n-Αντιγραφή-e1741618858347.webp"},"0":null,"1":"","2":"","3":"","4":"","5":"","6":"","7":"","8":"
["GET
