The Tempi crime brought us all in direct contact with the true face of Greece. From the lack of infrastructure, due to the waste of funds, to the government's attempt to cover up the crime. Two years later, however, we see another, a positive side of the issue: the Greek people unity on the real issues of the country. Hundreds of thousands of Greeks (near or even over a million) came out in all the cities of Greece and demanded justice. (If you are not up to speed with what is happening in Greece, click here).
What transpired in 2025
Το χρονικό των τελευταίων εβδομάδων γνωστό. Ξεκίνησε με την αποκάλυψη του ηχητικού ντοκουμέντου όπου ακούγεται η σπαρακτική φωνή μίας από τους επιβαίνοντες να λέει «δεν έχω οξυγόνο», στα δευτερόλεπτα μετά τη σύγκρουση. Από εκεί, ο κόσμος εξοργίστηκε και γεννήθηκε το πρώτο συλλαλητήριο της χρονιάς για τα Τέμπη, το οποίο είχε μαζική συμμετοχή, ακόμα και αν οργανώθηκε σε περιορισμένο χρόνο. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, ξεκίνησε και η δυνατή πίεση κατά της κυβέρνησης, από το λαό και κάποια μέσα.
Then came the Prime Minister's interview. An interview that exposed the PM, who tried to defuse the situation. However, with an attitude of denial of responsibility and without clear answers, the interview backfired. This was followed by discussions about the preliminary investigation, Triantopoulos' responsibilities in the cover-up of the scene of the crime and the provocative stance of prominent government officials against the parents. The last stop was the independent agency (ΕΟΔΑΣΑΑΜ) report that left the entire government exposed. In this climate, we were led to the rallies that showed how people feel about the crime at Tempi, and the response was resounding.
Οι ελλιπείς εξηγήσεις
Μια τόσο δυνατή παρουσία κόσμου δείχνει πολλά. Πρώτον, είναι ξεκάθαρη η οργή του λαού με τα Τέμπη και την κυβέρνηση γενικότερα. Τέτοια κινητοποίηση δεν έχει ξαναγίνει στην χώρα μας. Αλλά το μήνυμα άφησε την κυβέρνηση σχετικά ασυγκίνητη. Τα πρώτα δημοσιεύματα μιλούσανε για ανασχηματισμό και μετά ο ΠΘ μίλησε για ασφαλή γραμμή Θεσσαλονίκη – Αθήνα ως το 2027. Τέτοιες δηλώσεις, ωστόσο, είναι προσβλητικές προς το σύνολο των Ελλήνων. Από τη μία, ο ανασχηματισμός είναι εκτός θέματος. Από την άλλη, η εγγύηση ότι ο σιδηρόδρομος θα είναι ασφαλής ως το 2027 είναι ακόμα χειρότερη, διότι μαρτυρά ότι μέχρι τώρα (αλλά και για τα επόμενα 2 χρόνια) τα τρένα είναι επικίνδυνα! Παραδέχονται λοιπόν ότι ο Καραμανλής μας κορόιδευε, και αντί (έστω και για λόγους επικοινωνιακούς) να τον καθαιρέσουν, δεν ακούστηκε τίποτα!
Αυτό που επίσης δεν ακούστηκε καθόλου από κυβερνητικά χείλη είναι τι συμβαίνει με τη συγκάλυψη, το πιο βασικό αίτημα των συλλαλητηρίων. Η απάντηση είναι ότι «θα αποφανθεί η δικαιοσύνη». Μια εύκολη και πολιτικά ορθή απάντηση, η οποία όμως δεν βγάζει την κυβέρνηση από τη δύσκολη θέση, γιατί δεν ικανοποιεί κανέναν. Μπάζωμα, παραποιημένα ηχητικά και, το βασικότερο όλων, το φορτίο της εμπορικής αμαξοστοιχίας. Μόνο όταν απαντηθούν αυτά, και αποφευχθεί κάποιο έξυπνο παιχνίδι με τον νόμο περί ευθύνης υπουργών (κάτι που θα έσωζε τον Καραμανλή), θα αρχίσει να κατευνάζεται η οργή του κόσμου.
What comes now
In the wake of all this, the political landscape will change considerably. Kyriakos Mitsotakis will begin to be attacked more forcefully than ever within his party, especially with the situation being volatile outside the country as well. Changes will come to the opposition that will show which parties and leaders will stand as the next contenders for power. The situation with such a fragmented and multi-party Parliament will not last.
The force of change, however, will not come from voters who were disappointed with the Government and want to change course. The course will change from young people, because a very positive result of the rallies was the number of young people in the streets. We see a militancy and an interest in politics from the new generation, which has been lacking in recent years. A lot of people were non-voters in the last election however, the climate of indifference seems to be dissipating. Of course, it is one thing to participate in protests and a very different thing to participate in elections. Because protests always have an anti-systemic feel to them. Despite that, I feel confident and optimistic that more people will vote due to the crime at Tempi.
In summation, we made an overall assessment of the post-protest era. The government has much to answer for. And the answers are more pressing than ever. On the other hand, we, the people, were united in the face of a terrible tragedy, a heinous crime. We were united by anger and pain. Now it's time to be united by the hope of the future which is possible to be conquered when we are together. In order to prevent the next Tempi and all of us change Greece. Together!
